Boys and Girls Football Tournament

What a fantastic week it has been for both the boys and girls’ year 3 and 4 mixed football teams and Mr Kavanagh. At Whitehall Park, we were lucky enough to go to the Islington inter-schools tournament held at Market Road pitches.

On October 5th the 12 strong squad of boys from year 3 and 4 took the bus down to the pitches and what happened next can only be described as fantastic. The boys were put in a strong group with teams from Ashmount, Grafton, New North and Sacred Heart. During the first match the boys were fortunate that goalkeeper Franek made a super save from an Ashmount penalty and just a couple of minutes later Nieko  was able to give us the winning goal.

After the first game the boys grew in confidence and dispatched the rest of the group with ease. First came a 3-0 win v Sacred Heart with goals from Ayaz x 2 and Aaron.

Next up, another confident display with fantastic teamwork and build up play led us to 2-0 winners against Grafton, this time goals from Efe and once again Ayaz.

Needing just a draw in the final game to be group winners and progress to the semifinals, the boys were assured in their performance and comfortably progressed, ultimately topping the group with 10 points from just four matches.

Progressing into the final four schools in Islington is a massive achievement and with a very unlucky defeat in the semifinals, the boys were able to secure 3rd place out of 20 schools. A Huge well done from Coach Mr Kavanagh and the whole school.

Following on from the boys’ tournament, the girls made their way down to the Market Road pitches on October 10th, there was lots of excitement on the bus journey down and the girls backed it up with some unbelievable football.

In the first game the girls battled and fought for every ball and beat a very strong team 1-0 thanks to some fantastic play between Eve and Georgie leading to Georgie scoring her first of the afternoon.

The girls had a squad of 11 players and all of them were required to play a massive part with everyone putting in a performance that Whitehall Park could be proud of.

Once again in the second game the girls proved too strong for the other school and ran out 1-0 winners, thanks to another goal from superstar Georgie.

After topping our group we were moved to the tough “Winners group” consisting of all group winners. Another game and another winning goal for Georgie after some fantastic team play. A 0-0 draw in our final game left us as the only school in Islington to finish the day with 3 wins and draw and therefore crowned number 1 football team in Islington. A massive well done to our girls!!

It has been a fantastic week for our football teams and with the rest of the children in the school very keen to be involved, we are sure there will be many more successes to come.
