Curriculum Overview

Intent

We inspire a love of lifelong learning by providing a curriculum that is creative, rich and broad. Our curriculum develops every aspect of the child, preparing them for the next step in their education and throughout their lives. Through our curriculum, the children can develop the knowledge and skills to excel in a rapidly changing world.

Our curriculum expands children’s horizons through learning about the wider world and ignites ambitions and passions that develop a love of learning.Β  We have high expectations for every child academically, socially and emotionally. We ensure that children, staff and families work actively in partnership to enable all children to realise their full potential. We provide opportunities that ensure pupils of all abilities and backgrounds succeed and aim for all children to thrive and become independent learners and thinkers.

Through the promotion of British and school values we ensure that our curriculum focuses on development of the whole child and values all aspects of what makes our children unique and special

Implementation

At Whitehall Park we have designed a bespoke curriculum, that is rich and broad, enabling every child to achieve success. We deliver high quality education through a skills-based curriculum that is brought to life through memorable experiences such as educational visits, visitors to the school and special events.

Creativity lies at the heart of the curriculum. We make links between the different areas of the curriculum linking history and geography, with art, science and literacy. We bring knowledge to life through hands on experiences. The children explore a range of diverse, high-quality literature in reading and writing lessons linked to this topic.

Our curriculum is diverse.Β  We provide opportunities that both connect with their roots in their local landscape, to foster a sense of belonging within our community. We expand their horizons through learning about the wider world.Β  We want our children to have a passion to learn and inspire of love of lifelong learning. WeΒ  teach children about key artists, scientists, geographers and historians.

We nurture pupils’ potential through a personalised approach to learning, ensuring that our children are happy, independent, confident all-rounders.Β  We encourage a β€˜be interested and be interesting’ attitude in children.

From the Reception Class to Year 6 in Key Stage 2, Whitehall Park offers a curriculum suitable for our inclusive intake that meets the needs of all pupils and leads to high standards of academic and personal achievement. This is based on the Early Years and Foundation Stage Statutory Framework and Development Matters in Reception and the National Curriculum in Key Stage 1 and 2. Our curriculum aims to equip each child with the appropriate knowledge and skills to develop their own academic potential, personal and social values in preparation for life in the evolving British society. We also offer a range of exciting extra-curricular activities. We want children to develop a love of learning that goes beyond the scope of the curriculum and prepares them for their future adult lives, whatever they may be.

Our SENCO ensures that requirements of the SEN Code of Practice are met and works with teachers and the team of classroom assistants to support pupils with specific learning needs so that they can participate fully, learn and succeed. When they leave us at the end of Year 6, pupils will have received an excellent education preparing them for their secondary school of choice.

The support of parents and carers is crucial to a child’s education and we work in partnership with parents, carers and the local community and welcome their involvement.

Impact

We nurture every child and celebrate success. Our children are taught to be independent learners who are able to seek solutions creatively and cooperatively. We develop an β€˜inquiring’ mind and to encourage children to be confident enough to take risks in our learning and to learn from our mistakes. We have clear expectations for each year group so teachers and learners know what has been achieved and the next learning steps.Β  We ensure that all pupils are making progress by evaluating their knowledge, understanding and the skills that they have learnt. This ensures that children have the knowledge and cultural capital to succeed in secondary school and in future life.

The impact of the school’s curriculum can be seen in the books they produce and the outcomes for all groups of pupils within the school. Everything we do is with the child at mind, and strong relationships are built between pupils and staff which create an atmosphere for learning which is conducive to success.

Pupils’ progress is measured through ongoing assessment and through three key assessment points during the year. Work is planned to address misconceptions and gaps in learning are identified to ensure that the curriculum effectively meets the needs of all pupils.
