In year 1 this week we celebrated Black History month. We started the week with an assembly on famous historical figures from around the world. We discussed equality and what that looks like in our community. We then researched Mary Seacole, a famous Jamaican nurse during the Crimean War. We discussed what makes her contributions significant to the community. Later on in the week we had a dance company come in; African Acts and do a dance workshop for Lavender and Jasmine. We learnt special dances moves and danced to drums. We all had a lot of fun and enjoyed learning and dancing to a rhythm and beat of African music. We also painted an African design using specific colours and these are displayed in our year 1 classrooms.
